PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The NuView Academy provides a free, appropriate, public education (FAPE), in the least restrictive environment (LRE) for students exhibiting severe symptoms or diagnosis of Depression, ADHD, Conduct Disorder, Thought Disorder, or Anxiety Disorder.  This is a collaborative effort.  The Middlesex Regional Educational Services Commission shall provide all educational programming and coordinate all referral procedures.  Princeton House will provide the psychiatric and therapeutic components for reaching goals that will assure the success of the program.  The program is offered from 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, on a 48 week basis per school year.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Nuview Academy is committed to providing the highest quality educational and  clinical environment that enables special needs students with emotional and behavioral disabilities to achieve individualized academic excellence.  Our exemplary, stimulating atmosphere provides our students with the tools needed to improve their self-esteem, develop individual responsibility, and evolve into productive members of society.

PROGRAM GOALS & OBJECTIVES

The Student will:

  1. Participate in a psychiatric evaluation to determine current therapeutic needs
  2. Participate in family therapy to gain insights into their families' constellation
  3. Acquire cognitive behavioral skills training
  4. Learn self-management techniques
  5. Learn self-management techniques
  6. Participate fully in individual therapy to promote individual growth
  7. Obtain medication education for increased understanding of prescribed medications
  8. Learn core curriculum skills as described in each student's IEP

The Commission staff and Princeton House staff will:

  1. Provide an Extended School Year program
  2. Create a positive therapeutic environment for the students
  3. Develop a positive behavior management system, with emphasis on positive reinforcement for acceptable behavior
  4. Maintain liaison with the local child study team
  5. Conduct regular Interdisciplinary/treatment Team meetings
  6. Provide individualized cognitive Interventions for students
  7. Evaluate each student's behavior every two weeks
  8. Maintain, through the Case Manager, close contact with the home
  9. Provide an academic program as described in each student's IEP

STUDENT SELECTION CRITERIA

Classified students pursuant to 6A:14, as Eligible for Special Education and Related Services with any of the following disabilities:

Students will be expected to meet the following criteria prior to admission to the program:

  1. Demonstrate cognitive and developmental maturity to function within the treatment milieu
  2. Be physically stable and not in need of acute detoxification from drugs or alcohol
  3. Exhibit sufficient impulse control so that constant, close supervision is not required

Clinical Support Services provides to all students the emotional and behavioral support needed to address those issues which ensure that all students fully benefit from  instruction and learn to effectively make decisions and problem solve.  Services include:

The NuView Academy is located at 1 Park Avenue in Piscataway, NJ.  With ready access from Routes 1, 18, 287 and the New Jersey Turnpike, students from Middlesex and adjacent counties may conveniently be served.

Written referrals with the student's child study team records are reviewed prior to a scheduled intake meeting.  Resident child study team members, parents/guardians and students are requested to attend the intake interviews.
